SUMMARY:Roundtable on Accountability of the Patent Office
DESCRIPTION:Restriction on the scope of patentability to prevent the granti
 ng of patents for frivolous inventions is one of the significant public in
 terest safeguards in the Indian Patents Act. Granting patents on frivolous
  inventions can create undesirable monopolies\, particularly in critical p
 harmaceutical products\, and also stifle innovation. The Section 3 of the 
 Patents Act excludes various types of frivolous inventions from patent pro
 tection to address the above concerns. Despite clear exclusions\, the Pate
 nt Office has\, over the past two decades\, granted numerous patents on cl
 aims that violate these provisions. This trend undermines the intent of th
 e law and risks creating barriers to innovation and access to essential me
 dical products.\n\nThe Roundtable on Accountability of the Patent Office w
 as held to discuss how the frivolous grant of patents is hampering the inn
 ovative system in the country. The main objectives of the meeting were as 
 follows:\n\n 	Generate more awareness regarding the need to enhance the ac
 countability of the Patent Office\n 	Bring together evidence in grant of p
 atents from various technological areas\n 	Document the practices of the P
 atent Office\, which are detrimental to technological advancement and inno
 vation by deviating from Section 3\n 	Discuss measures to enhance the acco
 untability of the Patent Office.\n\nPublic health experts\, policy researc
 hers and analysts\, academicians\, and representatives of civil society or
 ganisations attended the roundtable held in New Delhi.\n\nKey Takeaways an
